Divergent Microfactories Creates World's First 3D-Printed Supercar

San Francisco-based engineering studio Divergent Microfactories has unveiled the world’s first 3D-printed supercar, the Blade. Centered around the premise of 3D-printed aluminum joints that connect pieces of carbon fiber tubing to create the chassis, the process is not only environmentally-friendly by dramatically reducing energy usage during manufacture, but also makes the chassis a whopping 90% lighter than traditional cars. As for the Blade itself, a 700 hp bi-fuel engine capable of running on compressed natural gas or gasoline enables the 635 kg car (approximately 1,400 pounds) to accelerate from 0-100 in two seconds. With plans in the near future to sell the Blade in limited numbers in California, expect to hear much more about this ambitious new venture.
